Health Conditions & TPD Claims

Does my health condition qualify for a TPD claim?

It's one of the most common questions we're asked — and the answer surprises a lot of people. Total and permanent disability (TPD) claims are not decided by the name of your condition. They're decided by whether your illness or injury stops you from working in a job suited to your training, education and experience, and whether that's likely to be permanent.

That means almost any serious health condition can potentially support a claim — physical or psychological — as long as there is medical evidence showing how it affects your capacity to work. Two people with the same diagnosis can have very different outcomes depending on their cover, their work history, and the wording of their policy.

It's about your capacity to work, not a diagnosis label

You don't need a condition from a special list. If your illness or injury has stopped you working and is expected to be ongoing, it's worth checking what cover sits in your super — even if you're unsure, and even if another insurer has said no.

Common questions

No. TPD cover doesn't work from a fixed list of conditions. What matters is whether your illness or injury stops you from working in a job suited to your training and experience, and whether that's likely to be permanent. The medical evidence is what supports the claim — not the name of the diagnosis.
Many claims involve more than one condition — for example a physical injury alongside depression or anxiety. The combined effect on your ability to work is what's assessed, so it's worth raising everything when we review your situation.
Quite possibly. The conditions shown here are just the ones we're asked about most. If your illness or injury affects your ability to work and is expected to be ongoing, it's worth checking. A Free Claim Check is the easiest way to find out.
Yes. TPD definitions vary widely between super funds and policies, and you may have cover in more than one fund. A rejection under one policy does not mean every policy will reach the same decision. We can help you check what's actually in your cover.
