Can you claim through super with cancer?
Often, yes. Cancer can support more than one kind of claim through superannuation, depending on your diagnosis and prognosis:
- TPD — if cancer and its treatment have stopped you working long-term
- Terminal illness — if you've been given a terminal diagnosis, you may be able to access your super and insurance early
- Income protection — some super funds include cover that pays a monthly benefit while you can't work
What matters is the impact on your ability to work and your prognosis, backed by medical evidence — not the type of cancer alone.
How cancer affects your ability to work
Cancer and its treatment can affect work through:
- surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and long recovery periods
- fatigue, pain and reduced stamina
- side effects that make regular, reliable work difficult
- the ongoing risk of recurrence and further treatment
What matters for a claim
TPD policies vary, but the questions that usually matter are:
- you have stopped working, and a return to your usual work is unlikely
- your condition is ongoing or expected to be permanent
- you had cover at the time you stopped work (or when your condition began)
- you meet the policy's definition of permanent disability — which varies by fund
- you have supporting medical evidence from your treating specialists
A terminal diagnosis can mean early access
If two doctors certify a life expectancy under the relevant period (often 24 months), you may be able to access your super balance and any life cover early — separate from a TPD claim. See our Death & Terminal Illness page, and it's worth checking both pathways.
Related situations we see
- breast, bowel, lung, prostate and blood cancers, among many others
- people part-way through treatment who don't realise they have cover
- claims that combine cancer with depression, anxiety or chronic pain
